I am always surprised when I hear people say that they have visited or lived in Qatar but haven’t been to the Souq. It really is an absolute must-see.
The original Souq was refurbished in 2006 to preserve it’s historic identity. Some of the old buildings were demolished and new constructions were added using traditional materials and techniques. Surprisingly, it manages to retain an air of authenticity and continues to flourish as a trading market.
You could spend hours browsing through the alleyways of Souq Waqif, discovering arabic artefacts, spices and exotic ouds, beautiful hand-embroidered garments, delicate silks, cashmere and cottons, wooden-carved chests, ceremonial daggers (!), mosaic-crafted lights and so much more…….
